There are exceptions that could result in a larger separation because of someone else on the flight canceling their boarding pass or if one of you has A-List status.

Generally two one-ways are better than a roundtrip due to the flexibility. However, there are a few instances, such as AA web specials, where the roundtrip price could be cheaper than the two one ways. But in your situation, I would opt for the one ways.
